PRINTING ENGINEERING: OVERVIEW

MOST OFTEN people are surprised when they hear that Printing Technology is offered as an engineering degree programme in some universities. This is primarily because printing relates to people directly and touches every aspect of our life.

When was the last time you wondered how the designs and color in the packaging of your favorite products have undergone a sea change?  Ever wondered about the excitement and pressures in a newspaper office every 24 hours?  How magazines, currency notes, stamps, bottles, flexible packages and hoardings are printed?

Print is a communication media consisting of text and graphics arranged in a particular layout. Once it was an art using ink. Now with Computers, Opto-electronics, Information Technology and Communication engineering, it has added dimensions of science, engineering and technology.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With 2,00,000 printing presses operating all over India, the Indian Printing Industry is one of the biggest and fastest growing sectors today. In 2011 it was $40 billion industry. It's GDP has been surpassing the country's GDP growth since the last 15 years and is today at 14%. As of today the capital invested is around Rs. 350,000 Crores.

In Maharashtra(a state in India) alone 19,000 printing presses exist, employing 3 lakhs people and yet this number is insufficient to meet the increasing demand.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The printing machines today are complex and not mere mechanical devices. Likewise, education in this discipline has also developed rapidly.

B.E. Printing Engineering is offered in India as well as abroad. In India, Anna University in Chennai(Tamilnadu) had first started the four years B.E course in 1983 followed by Jadavpur University in Kolkata(West Bengal) in 1988.
Printing Engineering courses are often taken as part of a Diploma, Certificate or associate's degree program in printing, printing technology or press/pre-press technology.
-----
Initially the steps involved in printing were design (computer) - Film making - Plate making - Machine Printing (Press). Then they bypassed the film and now it goes directly from computer to plate then to press, called CtP. With the advent of digital presses, it goes from computer to press directly. Post press operations follow.

The course curriculum is approved by the University Grant Commission(UGC) as well as AICTE has been designed in line with similar courses existing in India and abroad. The syllabus deals with basic sciences and mathematics to advanced technology incorporated in latest printing technologies. The major part of the syllabus contains applications of computer science engineering in printing technologies, ranging from C Programming basics, numerical analysis, database management systems to advanced topics including network theory and computer graphics. The syllabus also include mechanical engineering aspects starting from engineering mechanics to printing machine design and fluid mechanics.
Students gain a knowledge in various disciplines in engineering and sciences.
-----

Printing technology professionals need to understanding of printing press operation, graphics creation and design.
Printing is challenging as a course as it is multi-disciplinary in nature, encompassing study of science, mathematics, mechanical, electrical, electronics, and chemical engineering with computer science and management subjects.
It is a discipline that will never die but works in coordination with other media.

Such an field therefore, provides a vast scope for job opportunities with wide range of industries which include Packaging industry, Printing industry, Product manufacturer, Printing & packaging machinery manufacturer, Information Technology Firms, Pharmaceutical companies and Many more..
